Girl, family apologize for rape hoax

The girl who cried wolf in the Palos Heights rape case has agreed to do community service as penance, her attorney said Saturday as the public reacted with a mixture of sympathy and outrage to news that a hoax was behind one of the Southland’s biggest criminal investigations.

Candice Lombardo knew something was wrong after she handed her tickets  to the attendant at U.S. Cellular Field. The tickets for the Sept. 30 game — the one that would put the Sox in the playoffs — were bought from a scalper for $150. The tickets wouldn't get her and her son into the game, but some members of Progressive Baptist Church would help her bad day become brighter.
