A 16-0 run midway through the first half sparked Wisconsin-Green Bay to a 77-57 victory over Illinois Chicago on Wednesday night.

Mike Schachtner scored 21 points and Troy Cotton added 16 for the Phoenix, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

“We did a really good job of moving the ball and getting good shots,” UWGB coach Tod Kowalczyk said.

UIC (9-12, 4-4 Horizon League) started fast, hitting its first seven field-goal attempts.

But it only meant a 16-12 lead five minutes in due to accurate shooting by Green Bay as well.

Trailing 21-20, the Phoenix (11-9, 3-4) embarked on its game-turning run.

Cotton scored 11 points during the 16-0 spurt, hitting three three-pointers and a layup.

“[The run] was big because the more we scored, the more we got excited on defense,” Cotton said. “That really motivated us because we were hitting shots and getting stops.”

UIC answered with a 7-0 run, but UWGB responded and eventually took a 46-33 lead into halftime.

Othyus Jeffers led UIC with 18 point while T.J. Gray added 17.

The Phoenix finished with a 22-3 advantage in points off turnovers after forcing 15 Flames miscues.
