Sandburg coach Jim Caliendo said his goal for the state quarterfinal game against York was to hold the Dukes to less than 10 goals. His team did much better than that, shutting out York in the second half and cruising to a 6-2 win to advance to Saturday's semifinals and clinch Sandburg's first state water polo trophy.

The mentor bender
They don't have a contraption at Wrigley Field that measures the loudest ovations, but Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster has a pretty good feel for these things. ''His was louder. Rightfully so. He deserves it,'' Dempster said with a smile of the ovation for the Padres' Greg Maddux, the former Cubs ace.
